His mother was a stay-at-home mom who reared Hank and his two sisters while his father worked in the garment industry and controlled multiple dress factories.

Hank went to a private school in his hometown of Forest Hills, Queens, called The Kew-Forest School. After that, he attended Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, to get a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre in 1985.
